This is a simple DIY wiring of the SR monitor check lamp (fault code lamp output). This will allow user to check for fault codes using the instrument gauge check engine light. This works primarily for the 1991-1994 s13 models with the S13 SR20 (ECU 62) harness , including 63, E5 and E6 ECUs.
Difficulty: **
Time: 1 hr
Cost: free
Materials: KA ECU plug, wiring harness or 22 gauge wire, electrical tape, paper clip
Tools: ratchet, extension + 10mm socket, 10mm wrench, wire cutter, wire stripper, soldering iron
Procedure: Part I: This is something I've already done. So, first and foremost, disconnect the negative post on your battery.1. Using the ratchet + 10mm socket, remove passenger side kick panel and gain access to the SR ECU.
2. Unbolt ECU from it's mounting points using 10mm socket + extension. 3. Unbolt SR ECU harness. Carefully pull out the blue harness plug.
4. Unplug The F1 (brown plug) connector and pull out from it's location. The brown plug is located just above the ECU.
Now for the fun part. Depin red wire from KA ECU plug.Use a paper clip and depress the tab that holds it. Then gently pull out pin.
1. Extend and solder red wire.
Put depinned wire into empty hole (Pin 24) of the SR ECU plug. It only only goes in one way. Splice and solder the red wires together. It should be like this; newly pinned wire on SR ECU plug Pin 24 goes to pin Pin 15 on F1 connector.
2. If you haven't already, extend and solder the consult wires. Match up the colors from SR ECU plug to the F1 dash connector.
3. Cover your soldered connections with electrical tape (like I did) or heat shrink tubing. Tape everything together and admire your work.
You're done! Bolt up your ECU and kick panel. Connect your battery and put everything back together.
Part II: Start your car and make sure it fires up and runs. Then turn off. Run a check on your consult connector (found underneath driver side dash).
1. Turn key to ignition switched on, but don't turn on engine.2. Make sure your check engine lamp lights up when key is switched.
3. Place a paper clip and jump/short out the Green/Red & Green/Blue wires. The consult port provides +12 volts in the Green/Blue wire. The check engine light will go out momentarily.
4. Remove paper clip following 2-3 seconds.5. Check engine lamp will blink(diagnostics mode enabled) a series of flashes. If you see that, then you have accomplished freedom. Hahaha...6. Check for code 55 - system okay, no problems.*Also, check lamp will turn off when engine is turned over and running.7. To clear codes or reset, turn igniton key to off.Enjoy!
