Stong exhaust smell when accelerating

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I have noticed over that past 2 weeks when I get on the highway and accelerate the car pretty hard I get this terrible smell of burnt gas inside the car (the air circulation is open, when it is close I hardly smell anything). I have heard of this problem with older Infiniti models like the 1st Gen G35.

Before I go to the dealer just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this in their EX and possible solutions. Please advise any insight will be greatly appreciated!

Some facts:
2008 EX, 24000 Miles
K&N Air Filters (Installed about 3 months ago)
Always use Premium Gas (Shell or BP)
Ext Temp: 50-65 degrees

Shouldn't be normal at all.

I've had my car for 6-months and have never smelled gas.

You beat me to it.... lol,

That's got to be one of the best posts in the history of the internet.

Raw gas and partially burned hydrocarbons are two separate but very important things...Things that you should not have to worry about. However since it seems like this might be something worth looking into.

Given your car has a "normal" service history.

I would first look at the fuel pump, since there was a recall on the 08s and the majority have been serivced at one point. From there I would move forward in the fuel circuit. The single high pressure line is a near perfect system in that it is simple and has little oversight, although a fault will be quickly detected.

Hydrocarbons (HC) are one of the top 4 controlled tailpipe emissions if there is an issue it needs to be addressed.

Your EX has two very complex systems dedicated to nothing but controlling fuel vapor.

The Evaporitive Emissions system removes fumes from the fuel tank and stores them in charcoal and burns them under certain normal conditions.

The On Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR)system captures the HCs displaced during refueling and stores them for burnoff later.

The control of the "smell" of gas is very important and not something that an owner/operator should have to worry about. If this is something you can replicate, or if you are experiencing a leak or driveability stumble (fuel leak under load). Or if something "feels" off when you smell the smell get it looked at asap.
