Hey guys, Im a KA-T guy, but dont flame me, you all have something that I need/want. I was at the dragstrip trying to get into the 11's with my new slicks (http://www.ka-t.org for proof :) And I launched at about 5krpm with the launch control on and about 7psi, hooked up and broke the mainshaft of the transmission, we just pulled about 8" of it out of the inside of the drive line. Soooo, I know that you have to put the SR trans on your 240 with the SR Swap, therefore, you have stock KA trannys around right? Well, who wants to sell me theirs? I am in Oregon but would be willing to travel to northern cali, or up into washington a ways to pick it up to avoid shipping, you could also put it on a greyhound or something.

I have an s14, so I need a 91-96 5spd transmission, and would like the stock shifter, although its not a requirement. Preferring less than 60-70k miles on it. If you have ANYTHING PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Im looking to get a transmission ASAP! Email me at [email protected] with a quote or IM me at RickMer2.

ThanksRick Merinahttp://www.ka-t.org

I have a KA, and I dont really want to be putting SR internals in a KA transmission.

Same s***. KA is the same as an SR transmission, just the bell housings are different.

SR has shorter gears (or at least a shorter 5th gear)

My SR ratios seem the same as my KA was. 4k rpm in 5th gear is 93mph on both my trannies. About aquiring a transmission, I have my KA one, but I live too far. I also would like to keep mine as a spare. You might want to check the for sale section or local shops that do SR swaps. Some people get their swap done and let the shop keep their KA motors with transmission.

Yes their ratios are almost identical but the sr transmission has better syncros and shift hella smooth as compared to the ka "I grind slammin into second" transmission. Remember the sr transmission was designed for high performance not for a fu(kin truck motor. dont get me wrong the ka transmission is strong but was not really designed for high performance....even if it was put into the 240. Hell if I blew my sr transmission I would be puttin my ka transmission in to. But at the same time I would sell my ka transmission and by an sr transmission for 250 or so. Trust me its worth it.

this is not correct.

Ka 5th gear is : .759

i am still searching to source this.

SR K's 5th gear is: .759SR Q's 4th gear is: .838

source of SR ratios: http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....3.321

As far as your so-called better synchros and shiit, KA's and SR's trannys use the SAME internals, just a different bellhousing.

no big Jspec, you normaly know your sh*t. And in a way you were right.. AFAIK the Q's trannys will just bolt up to a K's motor.. so it is possible that a swapper would have a Q's transmission and not even know it.

As far as that synchro stuff goes.. MANY (not all) Sr's have VERY low miles.. 15-30k.. even a transmission with 80k will shift smoother than your old KA transmission ( likely over 100k)

My KA trans had 65k miles on it. And it shifted fine.

Ya, no s*** rick. I know. You know as well as I do that syncros play a big part in shifting smooth especially during a race. The same internals but different syncs. Hmmmmmm??? Which one will last longer for the sr application or the ka application????:rolleyes Let me repeat this for little Rickey. The ka transmission is great and is very strong but it wasn't built to last long while racing with the syncros. Syncros going bad tend to tear up the gears a little faster along with a little extra clutch trying to slam it into gear.Thats all I was trying to say. Along with the gear ratios almost identical you cant tell the difference until you try to speed shift. *CLUNK* Ohhhh I must have the ka transmission. But hey no big deal.

I would love to see your evidence that the synchros are any different.

It seems VERY suspicious to me, that the tailshaft, shifter assembly and ALL gears including idlers would be IDENTICAL, but nissan would decide to throw some weaker synchronizers into the USDM trans. it seems likely to me that all the trannys were manufactured at the same location.

Did you just hear what you said? Weaker syncros into the USDM trans.........Well jeez they stuck a weaker motor in the USDM 240. What would be so hard to understand oh and all the trannys being manufactured at the same location comment is funny as well. It is proly true. Alot of trannys from nissans other vehicles are proly made at the same place(s) Jee goly the cars are probably made in the same place two. Actually I believe their are quit a few plants in japan. 17 world wide. There cars and corresponding parts are manufactured in different plants depending on which car it is. Even if the trannys for the sr a ka are manufactured in the same plant that doesnt mean things wont be different. Their ratios are identical but one is for performance and the other is soso. A good example of the same transmission with different syncros and gear ratios. The truck with the ka. Its geared different and shifts like s***. Why? Because its a truck and it was made for hauling s*** and not racing.

What's your PROOF for their being better synchros? Have any photos of them side by side? What about part numbers or something. I sincerely doubt they are different...it would be MUCH easier for Nissan to just use the same synchros since as CyberKreig said, they used all the other same stuff. If they changed something as simple as the synchros even they would have to have the whole damn thing looked over by the engineers again. It would waste more money than they would gain by putting in lesser quality synchros.

mojo:a) go back to elementary and learn how to spellb) why would they only change the syncros on this so called weaker transmission of yours? it doesnt make sense.c) you losed) proof is always good to argue a point that is not logical.

Dont let the KAT guys hear you say that. Not that it is the case anyway. Nissan did not 'stick' a 'weaker' motor into the 240. They made a marketing decision. AFAIK the CA18DET (and later the SR20DET) would have needed EPA work, and it would have made the 240 a threat to the US nissan flagship(300zx).

Nissan had (as far as i know) 4 RWD motor choices. KA24E, CA18DE(T), RB??DET(sorry dunno what was in the 89 skyline), and the VG30DE(TT). The opted for the only RWD motor in production in this country that wouldnt compete with the 300zx. IE KA24.

Non of this has anything to do with their choice of transmission components. Why run a sperate assembly line/batch just to save a few cents on synchros?

You give me proof and i will take it all back. Otherwise I think you are full of it. And i think the Stock 240/KAT owners will thank you not to bash their motor. =P

Wow, this just means I need to tear apart my transmission and track down an SR transmission.

Oh, I wouldnt call a 'weaker motor' something that I can go out, run sub 12.5's all day and all night, then drive it everyday. Correct me if Im wrong Mojoman, but that isnt exactly the essence of weakness.

Oh, and btw, the SR and KA trans internals are the same, therefore my SR/KA Tailshaft broke, so it works both ways buddy.

Everyone I talked too says the KA transmission is stronger than the SR becuase it is a truck transmission pretty much. I swapped my SR out for the KA when I broke it last weekend at NOPI, seems to have shorter gears a little, and not sure of how strong in comparison but I called the guys at ENJUKU and thats what they said, along with several others I have talked with online. Anyone else got facts on this ???

Well, whenever I get to pulling my KA transmission out I will pull the cases apart and see, if the KA transmission has brass synchros, then the SR transmission has brass synchros as well.

Well, it has taken me awhile to get to taking it out. Anyways, the KA transmission has brass synchros so the SR transmission does too.

i have both the sr and the ka transmission apart in my garage they are alike in every way the gears are identical the whole inside is a complete mirror, i currently have gone through 2 sr trannys and one ka that had over 160miles on it i am now running in an usdm s14 transmission and it as been working fine for the past 2 months....my 2 cents
