I know that the stock crankshaft is forged and not cast so its fairly strong but does anyone know if it comes out of the factory nitrided? The reason why I ask is I am in the process of rebuilding my engine and getting the crankshaft machined... I wanted to know if I have to nitride the crankshaft after machining (a necessary process if it comes nitrided stock)

no it wouldnt.. it would actually help. But the problem i.. I cant find a shop near by that can do that so if it didnt come nitrided from stock... Id rather not try to nitride the crank although it helps.

it's not nitrided. I've had quite a few cranks machined over the past few years (obviously not for my motor) and have never had to have them renitrided

Hey thanks for that response. That's exactly what I was looking for.

BTW, did you have to get your crank balanced after machining? The machine shop is not taking alot of materials off the journal. Just a little bit to get rid of the tiny grooves that the bad bearings left.

rebalancing wouldn't hurt, but it's not necessary if they're not taking off a lot of material.
