Has anyone put 245/45/R18 tires on their stock rims. My car has 235/45/R18. I want a wider tire but was told it would'nt be a good idea to put a wider tire on the car.

Yes, the 245/45-18 is just fine on the stock rims. These rims are 7.5" wide and can take a 245/45-18 tire (this is the min rim width for that size tire). The selection of tires in that size is also a lot better than 235/45-18.

I have been using the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 in a 100W 245/45-18 size for a while now.

Note that the speedo will be slightly off, but the error is pretty trivial.

Whoa! Now that is not a good deal unfortunately. Because the Eagle RS-A is a poor tire, unfortunately. My personal experience with it on my wife's car was not a good one.

Yes, they are reasonably quiet and fairly long lasting, but very poor handling, particularly in wet weather, poor lateral acceleration, did not brake well in wet or dry, etc. Required a lot of balancing, often - just would not stay in good balance. I do not know why Nissan/Infiniti (and other manufacturer) use them as OEM tires!

If you want to go for inexpensive tires, get the Dunlop Direzza 101 or the Avon M500 or Avon M550 (from Tire Rack for example). If you can afford it, please consider one of the other higher-end 245/45-18 tires (like the Michelin Pilot or Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3) that I mention in my spreadsheet in the sticky threads in this forum.

I have to say I completely disagree and say you certainly CAN go wrong by purchasing and mounting those tires!

Why take a great ride like the M45 and handicap it with inferior tires when they are the only thing connecting you with the road?

I certainly wouldn't want the hassle of constantly re-balancing tires while having the risk of less than stellar road holding ability in the dry or wet just to have a $400 set of tires on the car.

You have to realize that you are decreasing the abilities and performance of the car for the next 40,000 to 60,000 miles, as tires are not a yearly replacement thing!

Think about it some more before making this decision!

I may be mistaken... but wouldn't the proper plus-size from the 235/45-18 be 245/40-18? I'm looking to go to 245's from my 235's to not only get better handling, but to help protect the rims. The 235's just do not stick out far enough, and my rims are in bad shape and I'd like to keep them from getting worse. let me know guys.

Yes, the 245/40 is a better fit, but I think the reason they use the 245/45 is a more common size that someone found. Either way, though, the speedo will be off a just a little.

I used the 245/45 because there are a lot of choices. The speedo seems off by one mile at 70 (checked with separate GPS unit)

Yes! The reason I recommend 245/45-18 is that the selection of tires is much larger, and the speedo error is pretty nominal. See my tires spreadsheet in the sticky threads for more info about the possibilities ... also shows the potential speedo errors.
