As I'm doing my swap I was wondering if its worth keeping my stock SMIC, or if I should upgrade to a front mount before I go ahead and mount the side mount.

How much power/PSI potential does the stock side mount have?

Thanks.

Get a fmic the stock sidemount is almost the same size as the SR20 unit. It will heat soak in no time.

I think the smic is good to 250hp, if you have the cash upgrade to a frontmount and save yourself the time.

I don't know about 250 on the stock turbo. Maybe with an aftermarket turbo it could hit 250 with the stock sidemount for one pass.

Guys I know the FMIC would be the better choice, but I was wondering if a Supra TT side mount would be a nice upgrade to the 20's stock side mount.

What do you think? I've found some upgraded side mounts, but they cost about $450 after shipping = P

Are cheap ebay FMIC's a bad idea?

If you care about your engine, then don't do a ebay intercooler. Just my .02 though.

The Supra Sidemount is a good upgrade over the 20 or 25 stockers.

Cool I think I'll do that then.

Once I'm shootin for big power and have more money to drop I'll get a FMIC.

Having a good intercooler/system is key if you plan on making decent power down the road. Skimping on a decent intercooler just isn't something I'd do.

Supra SMIC isnt a bad option at all for some guys on a budget or wanna keep that steath look, they are kinda hard to find at a good price sometimes because the supra guys know about the dsmer's using them to make really good numbers with them(up to 450hp)and running as fast as 11.9,another great thing is you carefully pry up the retaining tabs you can flip one of the endtanks to have the inlet and outlet pointing out of the same side.Just make sure if you plan on doing this to throw away the little gasket under the endtank and seal it back up with JB Kwik epoxy or it will most definantly leak.....But other than that,it is a very efficient IC and will work pretty good for most of the guys on here just starting to mod their RB's.

actually a 2nd(i think) gen supra intercooler is a FMIC with inlet and outlet on the same side already, i have one.

they are a great upgrade. overall length/thickness is good, its black, and those crazy supra guys run them to very decent powers.

So i think your talking about the mk3 supra, with a frontmount, I'm talking about the mk4 supra TT with a sidemount.

is this what you have? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...33742

and would that be easy to install and retain the stock piping? or should I go with a mk4 supra sidemount? like this one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...33742

which one would be easier to fab up some IC piping to get it to fit up to the stock stuff?

yea it is the Mk3 one, i got all the gen's confused haha. thats my intercooler except i redid the pointless curved pipe and welded a straight one on. your gonna need custom piping no matter what you do away from stock.

well I'm trying to get a replacement IC where I can still have most of the stock piping retained... I'm thinkin the mk4 supra sidemount would fit well with little modification to get it runnin through the stock stuff...

Also I'm thinkin about some kind of fan or intercooler sprayer, do they work very well? Unless i pick up something cheap I'm more than likely going to be running the stock sidemount on stock boost for a while. So what if I had a small fan on my intercooler? or a homemade IC sprayer? is that a waiste of time?

the sprayers work (for a short amount of time) but a fan really wouldnt

the only time a fan does something is at idle, right? because when you are moving, the moving air at X mph would moves faster than the fan can pull/push. the only time an intercooler needs to work is when you are boosting, wich isnt while stopped.
