IS IT POSSIBLE TO DO AN OEM RADIO SWAP, SINGLE DIN FOR A 2-DIN?

THE TEETH ON THE VOLUME CONTROL KNOB WILL NOT PROPERLY ENGAGE THE GEAR ON MY '96 PATH'S SINGLE DIN RADIO, SO NO VOLUME ADJUSTMENT FOR ME.

SO I PICKED UP A STOCK CLARION CASSETTE/CD COMBO 2-DIN DONATED FROM A 1998 PATH.

THE '96 RADIO HAS TWO (2) CONNECTORS AND THE ANTENNA PLUG, WHILE THE '98 HAS THREE (3) CONNECTORS GOING TO IT IN ADDITION TO THE ANTENNA PLUG. SAME CONNECTORS, SAME ANTENNA PLUG. FITS LIKE A GLOVE.

I FIGURE THAT THE THIRD CONNECTOR FOR THE '98 WAS TO THE CD CHANGER, AS I DON'T HAVE ONE, I JUST LEFT IT ALONE.

POWERED UP AND...NO VOLUME. ALSO THREW A "TAPE ERR". CONTROLS WORK, DISPLAY, CLOCK, AM/FM ETC.

WAS THERE SOMETHING THAT I OVERLOOKED?

OR, CAN IT BE THAT THE RADIO ITSELF IS FAULTY?

ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, THANKS!

Should be plug and play, but the radio could be faulty. Could always compare the wiring using the freely-available Factory Service Manuals hosted here at NICO.

To post pics, you need to use a 3rd-party image host, get the image URL for the pics, then click the "Img" button on the toolbar here when replying. I use postimage.org.

THANKS, HAWAIRISH.

CAME ACROSS THIS:

"Well I’ll tell you what? There’s a couple of reasons why your not getting any sound from your head unit? One is the deck may have burned outputs on it. Caused by hooking up the remote wire to the wrong wire and burned the outputs of the stereo. Second could be that your vehicle has a stock amplifier that came with the vehicle and you have to bypass that to get sound to your speakers. The best way to fix that is to run your own speaker wire to your speakers. If your not getting sound after you installed it and it powers up, try to hook up a speaker directly to the wires behind the stereo. It should play music? If not then your outputs are burned in your stereo"

ALTHOUGH THE ABOVE QUOTE REFERS TO TROUBLESHOOTING AFTERMARKET RADIOS, COULD THE STOCK AMPLIFIER POSSIBLY BE THE CULPRIT?

Absolutely. Pathfinders had a few amplifier variations, and the head units for them put out weaker signals than you might get from a similar radio from a non-amped vehicle. Generally speaking, if both the 96 and 98 had similar amp setups, it should just be plug and play. But since an amp sits between the radio and speakers, it's a likely failure point.

As mentioned in that quote, you can do a simple test by bypassing the amp and running speaker wire directly to the speakers. You might not get a desirable volume level, though, due to the amp and speaker ratings vs. what the radio is able to put out. I'm speaking generically on this, of course...there's a lot of other factors that go into making stock systems work when combining other OE or even aftermarket components.
