hey guys im having problems with my wastegate not regulating the boost and im wondering if it is the way i have my wastegate set up. im thinking that it is not getting enough exhaust flow to actually open the wastegate. This is the only thing i can think off why my wastegate wont regulate. i have quadriple check all my vacuum lines and made sure that it is hooked up correctly. unless there is a special thing you have to do on the rb25 or something.where did you guys mount the external wastegate on the stock manifold? pics would be helpful. Thanks

I was looking at my stock manifold the other day and wondering how I would put an external gate on mine. I was thinking the place to put it would be infront of the turbo where the front 4 runners go. instead of the rear where the 2 back clys go.

How much boost are you getting? Do you have any boost controlers hooked up to it?

You said you've checked everything, how about the wastegate itself? That's usually the problem in most cases. Your placement looks ok to me, but I'm not sure it's the most effective location...

did you remove the dividing wall between the front four and rear two cylinders? If not, it's only bypassing the rear two. But that shouldn't make it not work at all. I'd take a look at the wastegate, what kind are you using? When I did mine, I removed the dividing wall and mounted the wastegate there, right in the center of the flange.

i grind of half of the dividing wall. i am using tial 38mm wastegate, i also tried a turbonetics delta wastegate and same result. im thinking it is the location of it. i am going to redo it and put in the middle on top of the turbo flange

is it possible that it is opening but the hole, restriction, and location of the wastegate is not suffecient enough to push all the air out and the air that was not pushed out goes to the turbo which causes it to boost higher?

This is what happens when i try it. ill put it on second gear and go full throttle and it will hold at 8 psi (which is the right pressure of the spring) for about 2 seconds and then 4600-4700 rpm the boost will rise up and keeps on going. it went up to 15psi at one point. i have a t4oE,t3 with .63 a/r intake and .63 a/r exhaust. dont know if that helps.

If the wastegate is good, then it must just not be getting enough flow. Whether the opening is too small or the placement is off I don't know. But it seems to me that it's probably just the placement. I had the same wastegate on my setup, but mounted in the middle and it had no problem holding 10psi to redline

are you connecting the vacuum source to the correct port?

If you are NOT using a boost controller, you want to run the vacuum line directly to the side port of the tial wastegate. It does not regulate boost correctly if you connect it to the top port. The top port is only used in conjunction with a boost controller.

By the way, the exhaust flow is NOT what opens the wastegate. The wastegate operates on a spring which is controlled by the vaccum/boost source you give it. Then exhaust gases will flow through any port that is open (whether it is the wastegate or turbo).

So just to clarify, the exhaust gases DO NOT open the wastegate.
