To put it simply

1) Clamp timing gun pickup clip on spark wire going to cylinder 1

2) Start up car, let idle

3) Aim timing gun at pulley w/ timing marks on it

4) Look at mark on pulley to indicate what the timing is

Pulley has a pointer.

Aim light there and count marks in accordance to FSM

Timing is 20 deg BDTC

i still dont get it how exactly the timing light works. you have to read the marking on the pulley. but when do u read them or what. does the timing light blink when it hits compression stroke or something i dont know. i know how i have to put the timing light but i dont know anythign else.

What happens if the timing of the car was set at 0 degress tdc. thats what i set mine up to when i replaced my head. what affects would happen. its a completly stock car too. if not i have to set it at 20 degress but on compression stroke right. so in other words when the pistion is going up or going back down. can you guys please clarify this thanks.

your car would be very sluggish at 0 degrees, slow revving.

aa i dont remeber it being luggish at all. and to me it reved up fine. jsut incase this is how i set my time i put the crank at tdc on the red mark on the pulley in compression stroke on piston number one. then i place the distributor on cylinder one. and it started right up before. and now it has no spark.

For the KA24DE the ignition timing is 20 degrees before top dead center. That means the spark plug fires 20 degrees of crankshaft rotation before the piston reaches the top of the compression stroke. When you clip the timing light onto the #1 spark plug wire, it turns on the light every time that plug fires. Shine the light on the crankshaft pulley and the pointer.

Make sure you disconnect the throttle position sensor first. Turn the distributor untill the last line on the right of the pulley is under the pointer.

Thats how you set it when you have the timing chains off to get it to run. Now you have to do what I mentioned above to 'fine tune' it while the car is running.

The connector for the TPS is near the throttle body to the right. Its a large gray connector with three wires (Light green w/ red stripe, black, white [the colors may be different for your year]). Its in plain sight, very easy to find.

Warm up the engine, turn it off, disconnect the connector, start engine, set timing, turn off engine, reconnect connector.

I would've scanned the picture from the FSM, but my scanner isnt working.

For those of you who come across this in the future here is a screenshot from the FSM of 20 deg BTDC

What would be best for performance without having to get anything higher than 87 octane, 18 or 22, or should I just stick with 20 degrees if i still wanna run 87 octane?
