Somebody has a VIS CF hood for sale locally and I'm trying to justify buying it.

Anybody know the stock hood weight? I might just have to take mine off and weigh the damned thing

Yes, I did search, recent and archived, title and body, with two different query phrases.

I also googled it with very little luck other than a bunch of cheap CF manufacturers trying to sell me stuff.

The stock hood is very light. If it looks like stock then dont worry about it. Pretty sure its aluminum.

Also if it is a daily driver then i dont recomend carbon fiber. It's a pain because it is degraded by UV light. So you have to keep a cover on it, keep it in a garage, or heavily waxed. Thats why i went with fiberglass and just painted it. Or just stay stock and save lots of money.

Are you getting a good deal on it? I don't think saving weight is a great reason to go CF. Are hood is aluminum and pretty light. I don't think you would save much weight unless you are going for a gutted race car where every pound counts. If you really like it or you're getting a good deal, then go for it.

It needs to be polished (there's a scratch/line in it) and it's selling for $200.

If it weren't OEM-styled, I would have jumped on it (assuming a decent design), but it is and I'm trying to figure out how many pounds I'm going to drop with it.

That's one of my main complaints about the G coupe...It should have been 400 lbs lighter

the difference in OEM and CF will only be in the single digit LBS. Nore more then a 5LBS difference. Stay stock or wait for something else.

Things just got worse.

I can buy the CF hood for $200 and sell my stock hood for $300

What do I do? I sound like a whiny 240sx owner lol.

Anybody care to comment on the resale value of a G35 with Carbon?

RN?

worst comes to worse, pay maaco to paint the carbon fiber hood to match your car. Should be like 200 to paint it. They would never know the difference.

Have a friend there when you change the hood. Line it up where the old bolts were. You can tell where there isent paint. It is light but it can still scratch the paint on your car. Also avoid windy days, the hood acts like a wind sail and will send it straight into your windshield. Last thing you want to do is put out another 200 for a new windshield.

It will look nice, just be sure to take care of it. When carbon fiber gets beat it looks really bad.

Coming from a bike racing background, over the years I've lost carbon fiber frames to small scratches since any tearing into the fiber, especially if the tear is deep, immediately compromises the material. Any scratches on my bikes, especially if the threads are torn, means I need a new frame since a jolt could crack the bike, and if you're moving at a steady pace of 20-25mph, it could spell disaster (new rims at >$1000, new bars at >$150, etc.). I'm sure that the hoods are spec'ed out to OEM standards, but once you have a deep scratch, the hood no longer protects you from a head-on. Good luck and hope this helps.

I think all of the CF hoods for the G35 have the factory metal "skeleton".

I'm still on the fence about this. I just found out that I was layed off from my weekend job, so that puts a little pinch on funds.

We'll see.
