Hey guys. I recently had 2 10" Pioneer Premier shallow-mount subs in a ProBox box and a Pioneer Premier 1200 watt class D mono amp, installed in my trunk. The guy had a hard time dealing with the factory bose and had to try a few different locations for the LOC leads. He got it working but it sounds like trash. The same setup sounded great in a 2005 CrewCab SuperDuty. I dont know what he did exactly and I am going to take it back to be fixed or probably removed.

What I would really like to do is install aftermarket subs in the factory locations and an aftermarket amp to power them. I have read that I need adapter rings to mount the subs which can be done if someone could post a blueprint for building them or email me a CAD rendering to take to the cnc guy. What else do I need to make this happen? What brand of subs at what impedence? Will I still need a LOC and where should I wire it in? I know people have done this before and I have posted on numerous forums with no help. Anything you guys can tell me about this conversion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

JB

I always grab signal wires before the amplifier. If you do it after, the bose amp starts playing around with the signals and it will never sound good. If you really want to mount a sub in the factory location, you'll have to find a sub that is specific for "free air" or "infinite baffle" applications. It means the same thing, but different companies use different terms. The mounting ring would just be an mdf board cut to the same outline as the factory subs mounting, with a hole for the new sub to mount in the middle.

My personal recommendation is that you keep the equipment that you have installed, and just move the signal leads and have the amplifier re-adjusted.

Thanks for the reply. I spoke with a rep from Image Dynamics and confirmed that the 8's they produce work suprisingly well in an infinite baffle setup. I believe I am going to go this route and run their i2300 amp which is what he recommended to power them. Why do you recommend keeping what I have?

I've just gotten used to what is great for an IB application, vs what is good for an enclosed woofer. If you just want some bass, and to keep your trunk space IB is a great option, I've just never had as good of an experience from them sound wise.
