I have a friend that runs a junkyard and got some 350z parts, he called me to let me know he had a diff from a 2k5 350z.. He's not sure if it's an LSD, is there any sure fire way to identify it with it being off of the car? Are there any details on the outside of the diff that let you know it's LSD.. I know my 240 has the orange VLSD sticker and noticeably no cooling fins like the open diff does. Any way to tell ? He says when he turns one shaft, the other turns as well... is it true that when you try that with an open diff.. the other shaft turns the opposite direction?

A very easy way to tell with the diff off the car is to grab an output flange in each hand and try to turn it in opposite directions. It will be extremely difficult to do so as the VLSD provides quite a bit of resistance for our hands. An open diff would offer minimal resistance.

what trim level was his car? only the base had an open diff, all others got the VLSD R200, and assuming it's the same as earlier R200 viscous units, if the shafts are out of it there should be a washer in the middle that keeps regular length shafts from engaging on one side

Ok, I will try this. The guy that has it doesn't know a way to get in touch with the kid who sold it to him... I guess i'll just have to go fool with it and see what it does.. thanks guys!

well.. I stopped by the shop and he mentioned that he said it came from a convertible and he didn't know anything else... I said.. a CONVERTIBLE? That means it's LSD! Yay! Yes the output flanges are very hard to turn in opposite directions... in fact, I couldn't turn them.
