i been searching, in order for me to finish my registration i needed a smog test, i took it today thinking it will pass its stock and they guy i bought it from said it will. but it failed. i failed the funtional check and the emissions test. my check engine light is on, that might of caused the problem also. i really failed at the NO (PPM) part. at 15mph it was recorded at 1402 and max of 807, with 25mph it recorded at 1453 with max of 746 as you can see its almost doubled. i wanna know if i can fix this myself if anyone knows what im talking about, or do i have to take it to the shop and spend 200 bucks. thanks in advance.

regular smog or test only smog?

is the little black box near the exhaust manifold connected and functioning? ( i forget what its called...it recirculates air in the cat to help burn )

I assume NO is the NOX test. If so, the EGR valve is most likely not operating. Check the two hoses that connect to the EGR valve for any cracks. Also the EGR valve itself may be bad.

since your car was at a test only location and failed you qualify for state assisted repairs.

http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/st...6.htm

Quote »Repair Assistance Program: Qualified motorists can receive up to $500 in emissions-related repairs to help their vehicles pass their Smog Check inspection. Approved applicants must take their vehicles to a Gold Shield repair station for repairs. Gold Shield stations are licensed Smog Check facilities that are independently owned and under contract with the State of California. These stations must meet higher testing and repair standards than regular test and repair stations.[/quote]

most 40's will fail on NOx, it's linked to the egr as rogoman pointed out. it's the gold colored saucer thing at the back that's connected to the other gold saucer shaped thing.

you should apply anyways, theres no upfront costs. if you have to pay the $100 fee it is paid to the autoshop.

when i had high NOx i did the state assisted thing and they replaced the 2nd gold saucer that connects to the egr, the gas cap, and hose that connects from the valve cover to the intake and it barely passed.

worse, he traded...anyways, the check engine light is your O2 sensor, thats for sure. prolly another reason that your didnt pass.

yep, the two saucer shaped parts are the egr and bpt. there's a hose that runs between them that commonly gets a nice hole burned into it from the heat which can cause the egr to stop functioning as well. check those parts.

Try some MPG Caps. I had the same problem passing smog. Run them for about 2 tanks and try smog again. http://www.mao.myffi.biz This stuff is the bomb!

Cleaning the EGR sounds easy, but I couldn't even get mine OFF!! I failed for NOX as well, with numbers just about like yours... 1400 or so, as I recall.

I'll hafta check that rubber tube between the 2 gold saucers... maybe mine has a hole in it too.

Good luck!

If you find out that your EGR is not working at all, then $200 for a friendfly pass isn't too bad. The EGR valve and BPT are about $100+ if they need to be replaced. However, its better that you get it working to improve driveability and gas mileage.

You should do that check on the egr valve where you push up on it to see if the car stutters. Also checking the hose. Both checks are easy.

Working on the EGR is freaking PITA. I hope I never have to take the parts off again. I think the hardest is the EGR pipe on the passenger side, cause there's no room to turn. Also the bolt on the EGR below the manifold is a pain to get to without a swivel socket. Then you got to really make sure NOT to drop a bolt.
