Hey all wondering if anyone has encountered this problem and found the fix if so let me know. The shifter has all of a sudden gotten very firm I feel like it is something in the linkage and not the trans but its just a guess. The shifter handle used to drop into gears in kind of a sloppy manner but now it feels like it has resistance and is almost hard to put into gear. Any and all ideas appreciated I have been scouring the FSM but have yet to find the section needed. 2000 y33

Sometimes crap can get jammed in the shifter itself. You can remove the console and try and clean it out. That's what happened in both my old Z32 and my old Subaru, at least. If not, it could be something with the shifter selector on the trans. Let's hope it's not that, though, as that could get expensive.

It has a good dust cover and I cant see how anything could get into it so I think maybe not, but that would be the first step. Any other ideas as it shift into gear fine and selects gears properly.

Get the car on a lift and check the shifter linkage.

FIXED
Went under the car and looked at the first linkage i.e. interior shift lever to rod linkage; took apart (pin and spring washer) and lubed. While this was disassembled I moved the rod to trans and manually shifted through gears no stiffness encountered however it felt like when I first did it felt like it was out of alignment. Went up top and ran handle (now disconnected from shift rod) encountered no stiffness. Reset to park and reconnected, shifts fine now no stiffness. Am going to buy some grommets for the shift linkage assembly as that may cause some issues as they age and stiffen up.
