I just changed the air filter and decides to clean the housing all the way to the throttle body with some cleaner. The closed throttle body was fairly clean/dry/shiny like it should be. I noticed that when I opened it up though that the backside of it was very sticky, like melted sucker or tacky spray was all over the back of it and the plenum behind it and it stopped just at the throttle valve. My instincts tell me this isn't right but maybe I'm missing somthing here. Is this the sign of a problem? I'm not even sure how it got there!

Probably carbon buildup... have you cleaned it w/ throttle body/carb cleaner?

I had to spray the crap out of mine first time I cleaned it. Gunk was in there for gosh knows how many years. Carb cleaner wiped it right off.

I used to work on vintage cars and motorcycles and found a similar substance in the carbs when they had been sitting for a long time and the fuel evaporated out of them. Don't know if that relates to what you're seeing.

You need 'Deep Creep.' It's one of Sea Foam products. You spray about half a can to the throttle body wait like 5 min and run the car until white smoke disappears and do it again with the rest. I've used it several times on several different cars and had a great result every time. You all know Sea foam works.

When you're cleaning the throttle body do you spray the cleaner into the throttle body with the butterfly open or should you not let anything get down in there to the inside of the engine?

Open the butterfly and spray it, wait like 5 min to soak and start the car and run. You should race a couple of times too. That's what people usually do. A couple of tips. White smoke wil come out like crazy, so be prepare for that. If you buy a spray, a red straw will come with it. Sometimes you can shoot it to inside of intake manifold when you spray, so make sure you don't do that. I have a friend who had a hard time fishing it out of the manifold.
