I find my 1994 q45 has overassisted steering. How can I increase steering effort? Thanks.

Study your FSM in the area of how to set the steering rack pinion preload.........don't increase the tension more than 45 degrees or you may have binding problems in cold weather!

I live in Toronto. Your comment about cold weather worries me.

You could also put on the tighter rack and pinion from the earlier G50 and 1994 Q45t. Perhaps only the pinion gear is different.

It's not like tightening the preload will jam the rack, it's just that in a zero-32F start the steering wheel won't self center as fast or at all then you know you have it too tight. Readjust it back half way or use Mobil 1 Syn ATF as PS fluid and back it out 1/4 of the distance. Simple.

There is a Generic TSB about rack preload tension and tightening it up to reduce steering wheel vibration [coupling of tire/wheel vibration back to steering wheel].

The FSM contains turning force data [use a fish scale to measure the 7-9-11 pounds of steering wheel force necessary.

Secret trick dealers don't think about even with TSB.

The pinion gear wears from miles and the center sport gets wider and sloppier.........short of paying $700 to replace it a little tightening every few years brings pleasure back and your arms get stronger.

I'll print out the page and take your email to my mechanic at the end of the month. I'll let you know what happens.

How much time will this take by the way? is there a lot of time taken up in getting to the part?

Thanks
