[QUOTE=Rex]Sports figures of every sport have tried to "cheat" the system as long as time has been. Many say if you aren't cheating you aren't trying hard enough. Think about the long spikes, tar on bats, jelly on hats, finger nail files, unapproved motor parts/tires/suspensions, excessively cold/hot accommodations/lockers for visiting teams, hiring hookers the night before big game for the opposing team, having the cooks use bad meat, stealing play books, stealing signals, corked bats, stickum, etc.
You shouldn't feel robbed by what someone that you don't know did in a sporting event you didn't play in against them. If you need to feel robbed, wonder why your loved one has cancer, lost their vision, contracted a terminal disease, was the victim of a crime or something that really impacts the happiness and well being of you and your family.
Sorry, if I come across as being a jerk, it's just my 2 cents.[/QUOT
Rex. I agree with you only to a point. The importance of overpaid, cheating professional athletes pales in comparison to dealing with a family trajedy. That's rather obvious. And yes, it's a sad part of human naturethat so many feel the need to cheat in order to win. Doesn't make it right. But if you do get caught, you should be at least mature, admit it and accept the consequences. You'll notice that racing teams/drivers get fined all the time for infractions. Players in other sports get banned for drugs, etc. Not uncommon these days. That's sadly not going to happen with the Balco Boneheads. Bonds/Giambi are going to escape punishment because of a horribly written MLB collective bargaining agreement
Technically speaking, Bonds/Giambi/Sheffield did not break any rules by using performance enhancing drugs. In 2003, MLB had no official rules banning them. Heck Bonds could have injected himself in the arse with steroids in front of a sellout crowd, and face no sanctions. But ethically speaking, those drugs are considered cheating as most other organized sports, including the Minor league baseball, have banned them . Bonds/Sheffield/Giambi etc. then made it far worse on themselves by following the stupid Pete Rose philosphy of deny deny deny until you're forced to tell the truth.
They not only got caught cheating but then arrogantly lied through their teeth when caught. It should come as no surprise that people are disgusted by that behavior. You can compare it to when Bill Clinton got caught getting oral favors from Monica Lewinsky. The hummers themselves were pretty small when discussing the overall scope of the presidency. I would hope you think Iran Contra was bigger scandal than Lewinsky tooting Clinton's beef whistle. There are obviously no laws barring getting oral sex from fat chicks. But what disgusted most americans was not Lewinsky's looks, but Clinton's subsequent lying about it. The Lewinsky saga was a minor scandal that has tainted Clinton's presidency the same way that taking steroids will taint the careers of Bonds and Giambi. Wil I lose sleep over it? Of course not, but I am disappointed how their arrogance has tarnished this country's national pastime.and I think most other baseball fans feel the same way.
