My '97 SE had same problem, vibration at 50ish MPH.The vibration is actually there at 30-50 too, but too faint to feel.Around 70-80MPH, the vibration is mostly gone, butif you are brave enough, and push to 99MPH, the vibration is back and back REALLY badly.
First, rule out the obvious, make sure you don't have a large bolt or anything like that puncturing your front tires.
Nissan dealer balanced my tires 3 times before I ruled them as idiots.Local goodyear dealer was going to re-balance the tires, to my protest, and then the goodyear manager, walking by said, "$5 says bent front driveshaft!"
Sure enough, the driveshaft was bent. I had it replaced and problem was gone. It seems that when the drive shaft is bent, and it rotates, it wobbles, causing vibrations. If you drive fast enough, you will hit a speed where the shaft will vibrate back and forth so evenly that the vibrations cancel each other out, thus the symptoms...
As for the knocking sound, my '01 LE had it. and my '97 and a similar problem. If you feel carefully, it's not the engine but actually coming from the rear of the vehicle. Something feels loose there. As someone described it to me back in '98, it feels like you are carring somehting heavy on wheels, loose in the rear cargo area, and when you step on the gas after cruising for bit, it makes a THUMP!
I replaced my rear shocks to no avail. My guess is that the rear suspension bushings are ruptured.
The '96-'98 R50's had this problem. After 80,000+ miles, the rubber bushings for the rear suspension arms would desintegrate, and makes the whole rear end sway when you step on/off gas while cruising on the highway.
The '99-'04 seem to have this fixed, but bushings still fail over time, and my guess is that you have a failed rear bushing.
how is your rear resonator? My '01 LE's rear resonator's joint rusted off, causing the rear end of the tail pipe to dangle. dealer said that it was fine driving like that (because it was backordered), but the hot exhaust gas ended up melting off the insulation on my fuel lines and then melted the solenoid for the EVAP canister... What a mess...
