Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone bought the tech package and kept the deck but hooked up their own amp and sub to the deck? How's the sound? What did you hook up?

Thanks

yea I did it in the very begining before I took my deck out of my old car, it sounded ok, but it is wayyyyyy wayyyyyy better with an aftermarket deck, especially if you get a high end 8 volt or 5 volt RCA pre-out deck.

High voltage mostly pertains to lowering noise, not the quality of the sound being decoded.

I don't know all that much about car stereos... so are you saying that you can still attain really good sound with a new amp and sub hooked up to the factory installed deck? I wanted to get the Rockford audio package, but it wasn't available at my dealership. How much of a difference are the speakers in the SL with and without the audio package?

ya the reason I'm curious is that the car I ordered (sap blue hb, sl, manual) they probably won't have for me until July. Now they found me with that has the sport pkg and the tech pkg. So since I might be spending more money on this new one, I don't think I'm going to get a new hu for awhile. I already have my own amp and sub from my car now and I wanted to know if the stock hu will satisfy my thirst for a "decent" system where I can get good bass and sound.

Yes you can hook up your own amp and sub to the exisiting Headunit.

You will need your amplifier wiring kit and something else called a line output converter. Those can usually be found on ebay for about10-12 dollars shpped. The line output converter uses signal from your rear channel (speakers) to give you the RCA connection to drive the subwoofer.

If you are looking to round your sound out inside the vehicle, the stock headunit would be more than enough signal to drive a subwoofer. But he is right, a aftermarket headunit will produce a punchier signal because of the amplification of the headunit itself.
