I just got my car back and I was driving around with no problems. then all of a sudden, I heard a loiud pop from my stereo and I see white smoke coming from the tape deck. I turned it off and the smoke stopped. I waited afew minutes and checked. Now the stereo comes on, the Cd spins the disk, but no sound to the speakers. This is a 02 Max with the bose stereo. I know there will be no warranty on this because it isn't mechanical, so can anyone tell me if it is something repairable or not. I know that a factory headunit will cost an arm and a leg, but it's nice to control the stereo from the wheel. Any suggestions?thankschad

your stereo should be covered 3/36 and they can do an exchange. the dealer can sublet the radio for repair and it doesnt cost as much as a new unit. You burnt out your sound chip on the circuit board inside. You dont have any aftermarket speakers added to the system do you? if not one of your speaker amps could have shorted out. I had a 03 altima with a similar problem. customer didnt complain of smoke just no sound. had the radio fixed and it blew again right away. I tested all the sound wiring in the car found no problem so we sent the radio and the amp to our radio repair shop and they found a dead short in the amp from power to a speaker channel. The fixed the amp and the radio that seemed to take care of it. I dont know how much it was since it was done under warrenty.

I have an extended warranty, but I'm almost sure it doesn't include the radio. My max has 50,000 miles on it, so the 36,000 warranty is no longer valid.where should I got to get the radio fixed?Or is it easier to have a aftermarket unit installed?thankschad

If its a nissan extended warrenty I believe it is covered.best thing to do is take it to the dealer and tell them up front you have an extended warrenty and you need your radio fixed, see what happens. But I am almost sure I have done a few under extended warrenty
