I'm sorry to hear that, but I think its for the better. Something just didn't seem right about that deal
A little bit of advice before you pick one up:
These cars seem to hold their value really well, so likewise, parts can be pretty expensive. If you find one for 5K that "needs work" it could easily cost more in parts to fix it up than to buy one already in good shape. I've seen front seats go for $600 a set, OEM fenders for a couple hundred bucks a piece. The 97 - 98 headlights go for $500+ all day long. OEM shift knob from the dealer is over $100
If you want a 6spd, buy one that's already got a 6spd. A 5spd swap for a 240 can be had for $500 if you look around. Not the case for a Supra 6spd. Most people will tell you to be prepared to spend 6,000 - 10,000 for a 6spd swap, the transmission alone goes for $3,000+ used and apparently just went up to about $14,000 new from the dealer(was just over $7,000 but I'm guessing they had to have Getrag make a special run). So if you find an automatic and plan to swap, be sure to figure that into the price of the car. Alot of times, its just cheaper/easier to get a 6spd from the start.
Check for all the vin #'s. The vin will be on both front fenders, both door jambs, hood, front and rear crash beams, and a few other places. If the car has had a panel replaced and no longer has all matching vin's, that will affect the value.
A good NA Supra can be had for around 10K if you look around. Just under 20K can usually get you in to a fairly nice TT, but it will probably be an auto or an NA car that was swapped. I've seen some bone stock Supras sell for around 50K (under 20K miles, 97/98 tt 6spd, mint condition)
I guess the biggest thing is, when you go to look at the car, make sure you take into account anything that may need to be fixed/replaced. You can't just go to a junkyard to find parts, and because of how rare theses cars are, everything cost a small fortune. Be sure to add that into the cost of the vehicle when determining if it is worth it.
Other than that, they are a blast to drive and get a ton of attention even stock. Hard to beet Toyota reliabiliy coupled with great all around performance and such potential make the Supra, well.... a Supra.
Hope this helps, and good luck finding one. As long as you get one that has been taken care of, you won't regret it
