Are the tension rods on the first gen Q's also referred to as lower control arms?

My 94 Q has steering wheel vibration from 50mph- to the low 60's

I have rotated tires and balanced wheels.

It's a problem I want to resolve, but after reading through all of the posts it looks like it could be many things.

The tires are wearing perfect, so alignment seems to be fine.

I have done a thorough search and there doesn't seem to be much of an answer.

I just think, I would go for tension rod bushings first...unless we also had a lower control arm on the car.

tension rods are also called radius rods. the lower control arms are different.

when you take one of the front wheels off, the hub [what the wheels bolt to, with the brake rotor and whatnot] is connected to the lower control arm via the ball joint. the lower control arm connects the bottom of the hub to the chassis.

the vibration could be related to an imbalanced wheel or worn tie rod ends, worn suspension bushings, ect...

you have to check for excessive play in components and bushings, tie rods, ball joints, ect...

Sounds very much like a tire imbalance. Alignment & Balance a 2 different things. The tires can be wearing perfectly but still be out of balance. There is Harmonic & Dynamic balance. Harmonic normally comes in & out at different speeds, while Dynamic normally gets worse the faster you go.Get them balanced first & then see what happens.

I'm with you on the tire imbalance issue... it might also be badly warped rotors causing an issue, but it's got to be pretty bad to actually vibrate the wheel. You might also try having the tires balanced at a different shop.

the rotors are fine..... i had those shaved in the winter...

I did have the tires balanced and rotated once..... could try again.

When I had the rotors done....the service guy said something about a lower control arm needing to be replaced...somehow that didn't add up to me...

btw.....this car came with Goodyear Aquatreds....nice when newerl...but they get noiser as they wear.... i'lll be looking for replacements soon.

What size wheels do you have? I bought some Michelin Pilot XGT V4's in 215/65/VR15 a couple weeks ago because Michelin is giving $50 rebates on sets of tires from now until Aug. 7.

If the mechanic says you need a new lower control arm, I'd get it checked out.

Please don't tell me there are different episodes in the second round! This is information that I don't need :D I guess I need to get my girlfriend's condo finished up so that she can actually live there... she'll get free cable with DVR (like TIVO) as soon as she moves in (works for cable company). I can't imagine what will be on her record list. :D

Did you say Goodyear? Immediate suspicion falls to the tires.

If you have probs with the Goodyear tires, try Bridgestone G3 Potenza's. They look after me VERY well. Plenty of grip (for me) & wear pretty well.
