Well, every day it's something new. I had a couple of used tires put on to match the amount of tread left on the rear ones when I bought my 96 I30 (now 137k on it) a month ago and then had an alignment and cv boots done and afterward, I noticed a vibration in the steering when on the freeway (about 65 mph it starts). Actually, the vibration can be felt throughout the car at that speed. So, I thought the tires were not balanced properly and had them balaned again, and though less, the vibration is still present.

I also have noticed that when I brake hard, but not too hard, there is an instability in the feel of the steering (sort of jerks around). So, my prelim diagnosis is bad wheel bearings, but there's no whirring or grinding noises.Anybody have any ideas?

Any help is appreciated...

Maybe they did a half @ss job at aligning it the first time?

Actually, I've realized the used tires the schmucks put on weren't the same size as the rear ones, and besides that, I don't think they're in very good condition, so my new assessment is that I just need new tires.

make sure you check if your shocks are blown too, that also might be a reason why your wheel vibrates a lot. but yeah, my first guess is the alignment of the wheels.

First of all, I would reccomend getting 4 new tires. Used tires are generally not in the best shape to begin with.

As for the vibration during braking, my prelim professional diagnosis would be excessive runout on the rotors. Runout, by definition, is high and low spots on the rotor which would cause a vibration during heavy braking or braking during high speed deceleration such as slowing down coming off the highway. My suggestion, take the rotors off and take them to a shop and have them measure the rotors in several different spots to get the measurements. Or, you could just replace the rotors and see if that fixes the problem. Although, just by reading what you're telling us, I would think it would be a runout problem.
