You do need to be careful where you have your hand. A common injury in a frontal crash is broken arms because of them being in the way of the air bag deploying. What position do you drive with the one hand.
And, just because you can't shift with two hands on the wheel doesn't mean that you can't put your right hand back on the wheel after you shift. If one hand on top of the wheel was better than two, why don't you see race car drivers using only one hand? (Even tho they have to shift)
