i recently got a 2001 pathfinder LE and i put some toyo tires and some rims on it and my steering wheel was shaking when i hit 60mph. I didn't like the people at the shop where i got my tires and rims from since there so passive and thought i was over hyping the issue. Mind you when they put my rear brush bar on they wanted to "hook me up at no cost" since my hitch was rusted they spray painted it and well they managed to paint my bumper in the process. Oh and they Cross threaded two on the studs when doing the rim install. SO yeah i got my front rims balanced at another shop and the shaking came down a lot, but it still is doing the same thing when i hit 60. not as bad thou. Its starting to annoy me. Is there something else i should look into?

ps this is my ride

what do the wheels look like? see what kind of balance they're doing. unless the wheel is a "deep dish" wheel, the balance should at least be somewhat similar to an alloy 2 balance where there is a set of weights on the innermost part of the wheel and a set of weights on the outermost part of the wheel. if they're just doing a static balance, it'll very rarely be a true, zero balance.

are the wheels hubcentric? if they're not, do you have hubcentric rings? if you don't, get some. that could also cause some vibration.

if nothing else was changed except for wheels and tires, those are your problems that are causing the shaking. especially shaking that appears at 60MPH and will typically disappear once you hit 75-80MPH.

you shouldn't need a road force balance (which costs quite a bit more) because the biggest thing that that balances out are if you buy crappy tires and they're out of round.

EDIT: those wheels can take a true, dynamic balance, which are pound on weights on the outside and pound on weights on the inside. only reason people don't do that is because it doesn't give the look they want.

without seeing the inside of the wheel, check to make sure they've got at least tape weights right behind the face of the wheel and pound on weights on the inner rim of the wheel. if the latter has already been done, then you're going to have to deal with it unless you don't mind pound on weights on the outside.

they had tape on weights and when i took the truck to the other shop he asked if he could put the pound on weights on the outside and i said no(i didn't want to take the look away from the rim) so he put them on the inside. But if this is what i have to deal with is that the only issue i would have? is there any side effects?

To do a full dynamic balance, you will likely need weights on the inside and outside.

if they did a proper alloy 1 balance, which is a pound on weight on the inside rim, and tape weights right behind the face of the wheel, then yes, it would appear that that's something you're going to have to deal with unless the 2nd shop still isn't completely zeroing out your balance.

you could always look into the possibility of a wheel bearing going out on you. if the wheel shakes/moves excessively when it's in the air. i doubt that that's your main problem though.

issue for you for having tires/wheels that are out of balance are that it'll be annoying to you and your passengers over time. there could be other things that it may affect over time like the wear of the tires and certain suspension components, but that typically doesn't happen immediately.

Couldn't you ask to have him paint them black, or do it yourself? I doubt people would notice a tiny 1" weight on your rim, especially if it was the same colour.

I fixed mine today. It was a simple balance issue. It wa only .75 out on one and .25 on the other. Made a huge difference corrected. They were balanced 20k ago when new
