Hey guys, my steering wheel is awesome! I love the way it looks and feels but some of the leather is coming off. I found a leather tape on amazon but wasn't sure. ideally I'd like to replace it if I find a nice one from a Q parting out, but I'm not sure if that's an option. I'd much rather fix it. Thanks for for the help. you guys rock!

I'd try and see if an upholstery shop could fix it. I don't think there's any "quick fix" that could be done without looking really tacky.

The steering wheel is very common for your model Q45. They can be had for $75-125 in great shape. They are fairly easy to replace if you have simple skills. Just cannot forget to unplug the air bag module after the battery.

I've tried sourcing. I can't find it anywhere. But I also don't really know where to look besides ebay/google

I've used them many times. It's a nationwide search of parts in all different junkyards across the US.
I just checked for you and they have (3) that may meet your needs - two are stated as Black, one is stated as having "wood grain"
They seem to range in price from $40-$85. The junkyard numbers are listed on the website. Give them a call and ask them to send you pics to make sure it's what you want.

I think the only special tools you'll need for the steering wheel removal is a set of "safety" or "tamper-proof" torx bits.

Is there a manual or a guide? I also noticed there's no you tube videos or online guides for doing things. The Q was bad a** as far as I remember. Did it really sell that poorly?

Not as poorly as those who like to re-write history would have you believe (especially the 1st Gen):

Well, the Q45 is still a full size luxury flagship. There's not going to be nearly as many mods available as say, a Maxima. I don't recall the Lexus LS400 having that much mod potential back in the day either, but the GS400 sure did. As far as aftermarket parts go, you're right, they're harder to come by, but there's still alot out there. There's plenty of documentation on here for all things Q though. You just gotta search for it.
