How many different non-airbag steering wheels were there available on the 240SX stock? Are these the only two, or were there other options available?

Thanks for the help.

So the two wheels I posted were used only on the twin cam cars? 90-94 maybe?
Also, do you know if that single cam wheel you posted is leather, or plastic?

All of them are made of the same material and the one Biggie posted ive only see on single cams. the two you have ive both owned, one car had cruise control the other did not.

but every S chassis steering wheel is universal. S13, S14, & S15 steering wheels are interchangeable with no modification. Same as the seats and shift knob. I have all S15 interior in my car and the only issue i have with the wheel is the air bag does not function because s13's didnt have them, and I have a hatchback so my S15 rear seat had to be creatively mounted.

I just realized myself and my car were the first pic you posted, I'm slow.

But yeah, only seen the first ones on 91-94 cars (the first pic was my stock wheel on '93 Vert). Only seen the other type in '89-90 cars.

Thanks for the info. I'm not so sure about the materials though... I know the first wheel with the cruise is leather. I've got that one here now and you can see the stitching and the seams at 4:00 and 8:00 for splicing the different pieces of leather together. But on this non-cruise wheel:
Image

there's no stitching and no seams. I think it's molded plastic/rubber material.

I can't tell on the one that Biggie posted. I can see bumps for stitching and seams, but it may be molded to make it look like leather. Never seen that one in person and can't tell for sure from the pic.

Your wheel looks nice. I'm looking into wheels because I don't have cruise or airbags and what I really want is a leather wheel with no cruise and no airbag.

So since you owned both the first two... Do you know if the center horn switch sections interchangeable? Would I be able to put the center horn switch section with no cruise buttons onto the leather wheel?

Haha! Nice.

So were either of those first two wheels used on other Nissan products, or are they unique to the 240SX? Any idea?

Its not leather, its....something. You might be right about the stitching, I can't remember right now, I haven't seen my cruise-control steering wheel in so long. The air bag thing doesn't matter, just dont hook it up to anything :rotfl Between the first two wheels you posted, the center is interchangable.

In MY opinion, I would just stick to the S15 wheel if you're going for an oem look and want to replace your stock wheel. It's the nicest by FAR out of the group.

I've had both the S13 ones, and they're nothing to get excited about..... Overall, they feel pretty cheap and old. And honestly, that's pretty much what they are in this day and age haha. Pretty much the same goes for the S14 wheel. It's a little nicer, but not by much.

With all that being said though, I prefer the earlier (single cam) wheel better. Idk why, just always felt a little better in my hands.

I'm so used to hitting the middle of the wheel for the horn... I actually had another driver back into the front of my Z32 because I was pushing the center of the airbag instead of the horn buttons... Are those silver bands on the S15 wheel horn buttons, or are they just decoration?

So what about other cars that have the same wheel as the 200SX? I rarely see 200SXs in my local yards, but there are lots of other Nissan products. Anything else share the same wheels?

Yeah, in 1990 they used one that looked very very close. I thinking that the only difference may have been the logo in the center. The Z32 has a "Z" in the middle:
Image

Then for the rest of the years 91-96 they switched over to an airbag wheel with two small horn buttons on the sides:
Image

I had the later airbag style, but my reflexes were to push on the center of the airbag when I wanted to sound the horn. I tried and tried and tried and tried and tried to teach myself where the horn buttons were, but reflexes in panic mode are just that... Reflexes.

So for my current project, I want a stock looking non-cruise leather wheel that doesn't have an airbag. I'm currently thinking that I may try to pick up one of those non-cruise horn pads and see if it fits my leather cruise wheel. Think anyone would want to trade a good shape non-cruise pad for one with the buttons?

I would get one from a junkyard, but I just don't see S13's. That's why I was wondering if they used those wheels on other cars. I doubt I would find a nice leather cruise wheel on a Sentra or something like that, but I might find a crappy condition rubber non-cruise wheel with a salvageable horn pad and maybe I could just nab the pad?

If both wheels are from DOHC the center piece can be switched. Just the SOHC and DOHC wheels have different center pieces and can't be swapped.

Thanks again.

I went to one of my local yards today, and didn't find any S13's. Not much of a surprise. Also didn't see anything even remotely close to the S13 wheels on any other Nissan product. Everything was either newer and had airbags or was way older and had hard plastic two spoke wheels.

I did find an early Z32 with the non-airbag wheel in the pic above though. Man was it beat...

It's such nice weather that I may go to a different yard tomorrow. I don't expect to find anything, but it might be the last really nice day we have around here until Spring. I just want to get outside. :)

yeah in that pic i didnt have the S15 wheel or shift knob yet. and no the silver part of the wheel has no function, you have to push the center for the horn to work. just like S13

hahaa thanks man thats really the only part of my car i can take 100% responsibility for so that means a lot. It took a lot of time, a lot of searching, and A LOT of money.

As for the horn, yes the circle ring that operates the horn in the back of the S15 wheel has to come out in order to bolt to the S13. I just cut the wire and nigg rigged the horn to a push button which comes out of the cover under the column.

Thanks for the info on the S15 horn. So I could use the S15 wheel... That's good to know.

I went to another junkyard the other day and again, no joy. I found a Sentra with the same leather cruise wheel, which I bet is pretty unusual. I think they used that wheel on them for like one year only. I couldn't get the door open to check the date plate, and I wasn't energetic enough to decode the VIN, but I can tell you that it was rear wheel drive.

Short story is that I'm still looking.

So you had every wheel in that car! The S13 non-cruise, the S13 cruise, and the S15.

I think the leather wrapped wheels were SE / LE only. My base non-cruise '92 had the non-wrapped wheel. Could you get cruise without the SE/LE package? Maybe there are no non-wrapped cruise S13 wheels.

I'm clearly no expert on the topic, but in all the pictures and junkyards I've ever seen, I've never seen a leather wheel without cruise, and I've never seen a rubber with it.

So, my guess would be that the cruise was part of an options package that included the leather wheel, and vice-versa.
