Steering wheel button issues

Good day to all,

Have a 2011 Rogue AWD. A few days ago, my wife, who is the primary driver of the car, noticed that the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel would not work (I believe these are the buttons for control of the stereo). The next day, they were suddenly working again. That same night while my stepson was using the Rogue, they quit working again.

Any ideas about what is happening here and if a DIYer can repair the issue?

My wife also let me know that the buttons will work when she turns the steering wheel, but will not work whenever the steering wheel returns to center. A short perhaps? And does anyone know how to get to these buttons?

It sounds like you have a broken spiral cable. When there's a break in the trace, it's possible for it to intermittently work when the steering wheel is in a certain spot, where the ribbon sits just so to make a temporary contact.
