You don't have to take off the subframe, its pretty simple. Here's the write up for it.

Pet Peev. Fenders are upfront, quarter panels are in the rear and your subframe is in the rear, and upfront you have an engine crossmember.

But yeah they make it so you don't have to drop the engine and trans to replace.

i replaced mine with a rebuilt one from a local parts dealer and it felt like my car was a virgin again. The steering is super tight and responsive. best 375 bucks i've spent.

Can you tell me what the steering is like on your rack since you think it's bad, mine just doesn't feel right since I did the swap and started driving the car again. The steering just feels too loose...Lautrec!!!

Score yourself a HICAS steering rack faster ratio.

only remove the two lines going into the rack, dont touch the other two lines. i dunno why in that write up it says to take them off.

also the swivel joint. just loosen up the bolts, dont take them off.

oh my rack is leaking fluid and has torn boots and is making a nasty noise when turning and what not.The play in my steering wheel is also horrible...

I don't think the boots have much of an effect upon the rack. In terms of the noise when you turn are you sure it's not your power steering pump? In terms of the looseness you might be able to just get a urethane steering rack bushing. The leak though...forgot about that...I'm not sure if you can just replace a gasket or not. would be worth a shot though to save a lot of money and get the upgrade from the bushing.

great place that I use for genuine Nissan OEM parts(courtesyparts.com), here's the page with the diagram of the whole rack and it's components(you can click hover over any part number and it tells you what it is, click on it to go to that items page for pricing and ordering)

first diagram is yours, 2-wheel steering:http://www.courtesyparts.com/2....html

Seal kit for example($15.22), from the left side of the diagram:http://www.courtesyparts.com/4....html
