steering rack?

I went to get my car inspected and it failed for two reaons: a leaking exhaust gasket and the steering rack. They said it neesds complete repalacement because the boot over the tie rod is cracked and it is leaking fluid. I know it is not leaking fluid. I was wonderign, should I just replace the tie rod ens and get new boots or should I get a new rack. The steering seems fine I had it up to 80 with no problems. I wonder if this is the dealer just trying to make an extra buck?chad

you can replace the boots, never tried it though. its in the fsm. i have a few of the fsm in zip files.

They failed you for a damn steering rack? **** that...its not like its going to just up and catastrophically fail or something. Clean it up a lot and take it somewhere else

well if the boot is cracked it probobly is leaking a little, pull the boot apart and feel inside of it.

the boots are easy to replace, but you will have to get an alignment done ya know
