found this at a dirt track racing site.

I think this would be an awsome mod, Ive always wanted that go kart quick steering in a street car.

it says it fits to a 3/4" x 36 spline, any idea whats the 240sx steering spline is?

Ha, that's a trick a lot of Formula D and D1 drivers use. Makes spinning almost impossible. Ter-Tech, a shop I am with, has one on their 5 series bimmer...it makes drifting seriously easy. I know Millen had one on his GTO too. There is little to no room in a US s-chassis if you're turbo'd though so beware. That's why I don't use one.

Im confused as to how this would mount. Wouldn't you have to remove several inches of steering shaft in order to fit that inline?

One easy way to get a quicker steering ratio is to get a powersteering rack from a hicas car.

yeah, it looks like a good 6" would need to be cut out of the steering shaft, as far a making it fit, i think i could do it, i have no a/c or egr in way and the device is only 2.75" in diameter. it looks like i could stuff it right against the firewall......... what do you guys think, 1.5:1 or 2:1 ratio?

Ive got to ask:

why do you want it?

Definately do not get the 2:1. That would be insanely quick, and would make the car super twitchy at any speed over 30mph. It would also be difficult to use small steering adjustments.

At any rate, if you get one, post up pics of install, and do a writeup!

I've heard of people hunting down the front steering rack out of a HICAS s13, supposedly they have a shorter ratio.

Yeah, they have a quicker ratio.

I mentioned this in one of my posts.

Please, try it. I would love to see the results.

Well, I think the non-HICAS 240SX has something like a 17:1 ratio and something like an Evo VIII has 14.something:1. I think the 1.5:1 would get you some quick steering that'd still be streetable.

I do agree that the 2:1 would be insane. You'd end up trying to make minor steering adjustments at 60mph on the highway and end up in the trees!

The only other thing I would be concerned about (other than steering being too quick to the point of it being unsafe) would be if it changed the way the OE design of the steering column works in a collision. If the column is designed to collapse in a collision and the quickener compromises this somehow you could end up a shish-kabob in a front end collision.

ok heres my ****ty math: a 1.5:1 will quicken the steering ratio 33% (according to a manufacterer) so take stock 17:1 and multiply by .66 and get 11.2:1, thats damn quick! but I think it would be fun

Am i the only one that thinks stock 240 steering is already twitchy and turns on a dime? I dunno the 240 is the sportiest car ive driven so maybe im just out in the clouds but i would love to drive something even fizzier in the steering department

if you want twitchy, try a ser- spec-v. it has a horrible turning radius but man is it responsive.

I don't think the stock steering is particularly twitchy. It's probably a little slow for a sporty car, but for me it's not enough of an issue that I would go to the trouble of changing it.

I installed the HOWE 2:1 steering quickener AND i already had the HICAS rack installed. I'm so anxious to drive this thing!!, too bad i need to find a ka24de first. My last one blew up.. The steering wheel now has ~1.3 turns lock to lock as apposed to the HICAS ~2.8 turns lock to lock. It seems like the steering will also have a tighter feel, it is more difficult to turn the wheel. I will be using power steering, and i am installing a fluid cooler for it as this quickener will be pushing the fluid faster. A weld machine and some fabricating IS necessary to install this. Hotshot headers will clear (i measured correctly i hope) but oem manifold wont clear + obviously theres still plenty of room for a custom turbo down pipe. Anyway heres some pics:

underneath the quickener is just some chassis bracing i had welded up previously, it has nothing to do with the mounting of it. The pics kinda suck, full flash, my garage has zero light, i can take more detailed ones during the day if anyone wants.

Looks like some quality work on the install, but I would never want one of those in my car. Once you are on 17s and coilovers, the steering is already incredibly responsive, and the ratio is more than quick enough. A quickener would make my car very scary at 70+mph, and twitchy at just about any speed over 30.

i got an engine almost ready to be put in , i'm waiting for a few more parts to seal it all up and i'm working on some other things that might hold me up for a couple more weeks : / But i'll post here and let you guys know how it drives!

this is really something for a more dedicated race car, not so much a street car although i think its doable
