Well, I went to radio shack and couldn't help myself. I bought wires and switches for the battery and fuel pump kill; and then I got thinkin:

Push button start... yea

So I got the hair brained idea that to activate the accessories I would use a switch, and take out the key assembly and place the button there...

Tried to find a good write up on here with pictures; but to no avail...

But my question is this; if I remove the whole key assembly, will that just keep the steering wheel from locking, or is there another assembly that does that part?

I think you need a least 3 switches, right? two accessory wires for one switch. the on wire for another switch. and the two start wires.

its probably not a good idea. the existing switch has a lot of engineering to it. why replace with some 2 dollar part from radio shack. it will also be harder to sell.

im not sure if the wheel lock is part of of key assembly but you better get that right. you have to break a bolt to get the lock off.

if you dont want the key assembly , i might be able to buy it off you.

You are correct; there are two switches for the accessory line one I believe primes the fuel pump and gets things moving, the other turns on the accessories for the car. The third, is the starter.

I'm not looking to sell this car, as this is my second 240 and I intend to drive it till the day the frame rusts around me lol.

I just would like to do it because its fun and allows me to learn more about the car and how it was designed. That in irrationally; push button is cool.

I'm not going to deny that its needless, over complicated, irrational and quite frankly too much work, but still... I just can't help myself lol.

i got this pic from rock auto. im not sure if i labelled it right. or if is the right part. i dont know how the locking works unless the assembly is somehow connected to a part of the car in addition to steering wheel.
