Yesterday I was working on the car. I needed to turn the front wheels to get room to reach into the fender. I put the key in and turned it to unlock the steering wheel. And I started turning the wheel with the car off. After getting the wheels turned a few degrees, the steering wheel started spinning and making a clicking noise, but the actually tires were not turning. I have broken or loosened something, and I need some tips what part I should look at first.

Now, if I start the car, the steering wheel does turn the wheels. However, once I have turned the wheels all the way to the right or left, I can still continue to turn the steering wheel, and it makes the noise click-click-click as its turning.

What should I look at first to fix this? Could the problem be here...

Thanks

Does your horn and any other stuff on the steering wheel still work? Going more than about 3/4 turn past the stops can separate the spiral cable when the wheel is spun in the direction that tightens the spiral. It sounds like maybe one of the splined clamps on a steering shaft u-joint has come loose, letting it jump over the splines click-click-click. IIRC there are two joints on a G, an upper one that you can see the base of in your pic, and another on the pinion shaft at the steering rack.

Thank you for replying. I just checked to see if the horn is still working. It is. I also looked at the spot in the photo above, and gave the steering wheel a tug to get the click noise. Everything in the photo above that clamp, did turn. So I still can't tell if the problem is there, or at the rack. I'll put the car on jack stands tomorrow and see what I can see at the rack. I'll remove that boot and see if its loose there also.

It was the last bolt on the steering linkage, right at the rack, that clamp down on the teeth, just as suggested. It was loose as a goose. The way it was clicking made me think it would have been inside the column.

Thanks again!

Back to this issue, LOL. I needed to set the wheel back in the right position, one full turn to the right (or so I thought). So I thought, just loosen that u-joint again, and go back a full turn, then tighten. I guess I went in the wrong direction, and now the wire has come loose. Horn no longer works.

I looked for the part on Infiniti Parts online. Which of these two do I need to replace?

Switch housing (25567-CD025) $177.49 (other names Body, Clock Spring, Body - Combination Switch) replaces 25567-CD002

or...

Angle sensor (47945-3X10A) $329.96 (other names Sensor, Sensor Assembly - Steering Angle) replaces 47945-CA020, 47945-ZP00A

Final question, can I get this part out of a G35 at Pick-A-Part? I watched a video of someone installing it on YouTube. I think I can do it at the pad.

Thanks!

You don't need the angle sensor (SAS), just the clockspring. JY units are usually fine, but make sure you center it before installation. Turn it to the stop left, then to the stop right while counting the turns. Then back it by half the total number of turns, that will be the center point. Make sure the road wheels are straight before you start any work on the steering column.

NICELY DONE!

(I'm reading this thread and literally said out loud - "DUDE DON'T F WITH IT!" ...right before you F'd with it. :) )

Glad it worked out ok.
