steering issues

I have a 1990 240sx. Has anyone experienced a rattle or loose feeling from their steering column? Mine is loose from the lower column. I tried to get to it from the inside but I couldn't get past that black plate that seems to sorround where the noise is coming from. When I looked underneath, from the rack and pinion, the column going into the fire wall is loose and I can't tell why. Has anyone had experince with this and if so, do I need to replace a bushing of some sort or the lower steering column?

bro, thats kind of vague. you could have looseness in the inside portion of the column. more likely is the u-joint, rubber damper, or splines on the rack.

I appologize. I'm trying to diagnose the problem more, and a friend says it may be the rack and pinion giving out. When the car is off it is noticible, then when you turn the car on it, you can barely hear it. I might have to put the car up on jacks to figure this out, because it really bothers me. Sorry I couldn't describe any more than that...
