steering issues

I have a 1990 240sx. Has anyone experienced a rattle or loose feeling from their steering column? Mine is loose from the lower column. I tried to get to it from the inside but I couldn't get past that black plate that seems to sorround where the noise is coming from. When I looked underneath, from the rack and pinion, the column going into the fire wall is loose and I can't tell why. Has anyone had experince with this and if so, do I need to replace a buching of some sort or the lower steering column?
