I need to disconnect the lower steering column ('90 240sx) from the rack to remove manifold, replace rack, install headers.

I removed the bolt below the lower joint. what does the bolt inside the cabin on top of the assembly housing connect to? Do i need to remove it?

sorry about the stupid question i tried search

I cant say I have ever had a 240 coloum out so i am not familier with the bolt you talking about. but you do not need to remove the coloum to remove the rack or r&r the manifold.

i suppose not but i cant see separating the stock manifold. those suckers are fused. could use the extra space. I'd even disconnect the AC line too but id feel guilty about opening a new hole in the ozone layer. I'll see if i can pull it off tomorrow and report back.

I just seen you were in NJ so your rust is a bit more severe there.

Dont feel guilty about the freon stuff. FACT: each time the space shuttle is launched it is the equivalent of opening 50,000 R-12 Automobile A/C systems to the atmosphere.

Well....... that was before the atmosphere blew up the last one.

I agree that you don't need to touch the steering column to get the exhaust manifold out. Having the A/C line out of the way does help, though.

alright, its out. the steering column, engine, and ac line move just enough to wiggle it out. definitely a chinese puzzle and i dont think subjecting the steering column to those forces is good for its health, but i couldnt figure out how to disassemble it. wouldve preferred disconnecting it. hopefully no harm done.

what a pain

recommend cutting the aiv pipe as close to the bung as possible it catches on the column.
