So I had my M56 at the dealer for the timing chain recall for 10 days, picked it up and immediately felt something wrong. The car was jerking as in getting in and out of gear. Returned it to the dealer for 3 more days, they fixed it and was driving it for the last 3 days with no mechanical issues.
However, I heard a popping sound twice while turning the car on and the steering wheel getting to it's position. Now the shroud over the steering column has popped up and the steering wheel is rubbing on it. Dealer told me to bring it in but say has nothing to do with the recall. Coincidence?
Is that something that I can do myself? put it back to place?

Welcome to the forum.

You can probably do it yourself but why? Just make them do it. That's personally what I would do...unless you're a lawyer or something and your time is extremely valuable I'd just deal with an hour or two of the dealer visit. I do agree that it has nothing to do with the timing chain as 100% of the work for that is in the engine bay...they don't need to go into the interior for anything.

EDIT: Also, I think someone did mention this issue a few weeks ago but don't remember which thread. Try to use the search function and see if you can find it.

Thanks for the welcome.

Well, the car is out of warranty so I'm sure they will charge me for it.... trying to save some $$$

Found a couple of threads:
Steering wheel rubbing plastic housing post6706385.html
Steering wheel power tilt malfunction - '11 M37x post6655760.html
Looks like $2700 charge by the dealer....

(BTW, why am I not allowed to post URLs?)

You don't have the necessary post count to do so...it's a downside of the internet age, too many spammers, etc.

Those are both good threads though and what I had in mind when I made that comment. Good work on the search! Sucks it's so expensive though.

I am the one who posted the pics in the first thread you linked to. I never found the second about the power tilt malfunction. I had the exact same problem as that guy. You can see the picture I posted of what he described as a " green cap" that fell out of mine. I'm not sure what that cap did but I think it is part of the mechanism that limits how high the steering wheel raises when you get out. Look at the base of the steering column as it raises and lowers and you will see the bottom edge of the steering column cover catch, pushing the lower cover into the upper cover, popping it loose, and making it rub. I trimmed a small amount of plastic off the lower cover and have had no further problems with it. Probably not the $2700 fix the dealer does, but mine was not under warranty. I'm not going to give them even $500 for something like that. I would rather turn off the function that raises the wheel as I get out.

Mine popped up also. I had to take it in to my mechanic.

Just had my 2012 M56x serviced for timing chain recall at Herb Chambers in MA. Started car, heard a popping sound which was the steering column plastic SEPARATING due to rubbing against the dash. Called HC, they said unrelated to the job.
Another expensive coincidence???? Hmmmm...

Bringing it in tomorrow for them to look at it.

So I ended up "fixing" it myself. It's the bottom part of the shroud that somehow got loose and is hitting the lower dash cover - the one next to your knees. There is a reinforcement bar that the shroud gets stuck on and I had bend it slightly to make room. Seems to be ok for now....

I wonder if some dealers have found a way to 'offset' their earning for the recall.........
