Greetings, Seasons Greetings I guess is approriate now.

Anyway, I've recently started hearing a dull clicking noise in my steering when I turn the wheel at slow speeds or at a stop. I haven't noticed any noise when turning at higher speeds, which would seem to indicate bad axles. I'm not too familiar with steering systems, so I'm really at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

The car is a 1996 I30, 140K, auto.

Sounds kinda like a CV joint.

If you can sit still in park/neutral and turn the steering wheel side-to-side and hear the clicking noise, it's probably the strut bearings. These are sealed bearings that ride at the top of the front strut, and move with the articulation of the strut. I replaced mine when I installed my Illuminas around 140k miles...they made a noticable noise.

that was my first guess too. you can easily check to see if your rubber boots are torn. if so, time to replace.

Scott has a fair point as well. Basically, in order to make a good decision would be to drive it but I can't so...

Ball joints can also make a popping sound when they go bad.but axles are a more common cause

Thanks for all the replies. The cv boots are new, I had them replaced when I got the car (about three months ago). They were both torn, but I don't know for how long before I got the car, so it could have been too long and the axles have gone bad, but there was no noise all this time after putting new boots on.
