Is it alright to remove the piece of sheetmetal that runs behind th rear seat around the strut towers?

That structure is pretty integral to the stiffness of the car and the support of the strut towers. Unless you plan an replacing that area with a cage tied directly to the strut towers and frame, I wouldn't risk it. Matter of fact you prolly want the cage in there first before material is removed so the frame does not twist.

Why do you want to remove that material anyway, better access to your struts? There are better areas to remove wieght.

I do intend to cage the back half the car, but mostly its an esthetics thing. Im trying to clean up the look inside my car and Ive removed the interior from the seats back and I would prefer to not see them there if they aren't neccesary.
