Preface: what car is it, the 89 w/ a ka24e?
Usually if it's a bad MAF it'll go no higher than 3k.
If you disconnect the MAF and it:
1. shoots to 3k, then it's not the MAF.2. does nothing, it might be the MAF.3. shoots to 6k, then it's the ECU.
The easy way is to try another MAF, it will tell you immediately. (recommended)
I'm no pro (read: take w/ a grain of salt), so if anyone else would chime in, please do.
