I turn my car on and it shoots up to 6000 rpms. I'm wondering should I change my TPS first or try the MAF. I don't want to mess it up buy having it rev that high when I start it again. Also, what other things should I check before going any farther regarding the problem.

Preface: what car is it, the 89 w/ a ka24e?

Usually if it's a bad MAF it'll go no higher than 3k.

If you disconnect the MAF and it:

1. shoots to 3k, then it's not the MAF.2. does nothing, it might be the MAF.3. shoots to 6k, then it's the ECU.

The easy way is to try another MAF, it will tell you immediately. (recommended)

I'm no pro (read: take w/ a grain of salt), so if anyone else would chime in, please do.

yeah it's an 89 with the ka24e.

thanks for the advice. but should I try the throttle position first.

and if it's the ECU. I'm just gonna swap that engine. I have about had it with that thing

Either one shouldn't take too long to test, so it's up to you. It'll be the same list of maybe/not/is or what have you for the TPS.

is your engine light on?

you need to check for vacuum leaks before you replace ANYTHING.

no engine light. vacuum leaks? really. I always thought they made it stall or bad idle not high rpms.

a big one will raise the idle.

biggest one should be off the brake booster and I know that was fine.
