Static or Dynamic tire balancing?

Hi, all. A question or few.

I recently had new tires put on my wife's car. The wheels have lips on both side, so weights could be placed on both the inner and outer edge.

I had the guy do a static balance and this resulted in the DSP 9000 system only allowing/using weights on the inside edge. The tech did what I asked, but said that it would have been "better" if he had used weights on both sides. He said that the only time they use the static balance is for rims that do not have any outside lip for weights.

So ... my questions: what is the advantage of doing a "static balance" resulting in weights only on the inside edge? My understanding of physics does not lead me to think that there is any particular better result from a performance perspective? Is it just a cosmetic issue (i.e., no visible weights)?

a static bal is purely a cosmetic choice, if u want a weight free face u can have a good shop do a combo balance, clip weights on the inside lip, sticky weights as far to the outside on the backside of the wheel barrell.

Grant, Phil (SmithSR), given that you guys do this for a living too, could you guys also comment on this, please? I.e., what does Tire Rack do for balancing when a customer purchases a tire/wheel combo?
