chain off a tooth comes to mind. but could also be off a tooth at the distributor if you removed that.

when we replaced the headgasket we didnt pull lower cover ..just held it up with a nylon strap to hood .....we have done this before with no problems ...but this time torqing the head nuts the wrench pushed the strap off and chain dropped a cpl of inches ....but I really cant see that it jumped a tooth on the bottom ....with the tensioner and guide on the bottom it was still tight ....I am going to check distributor again ...is there any way to tell if lower chain is right without pulling lower cover ?

yes set up your crank shaft to top dead center by the mark on the pulley. then set up your camshaft mark to its top dead center location. usually on sohc aside from the mark on the outer edge of the cam gear the key way for the cam pin in most cases points straight up.

Found it ...distributor was off ...runs fine ...been fricken with it for 3 days ....strange last time we were one tooth off the motor would not even fire ..this time would do the idle thing with no throttle responce ....also marked the distributor location before and this time it is 3/16 away from original mark ...so ....appararently you can insert the distributor one tooth or so each way as long as you have enough range in distributor movement to get timing set ....thanks for info .....gatr
