Hi folks, I have a 2015 Nissan Rogue bought September 2015. Local dealer did first 2 oil changes free and I noticed a brief engine rap every morning and many times during the day. Two weeks ago I changed the oil myself and put in Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic with a Fram filter. NO MORE STARTUP RAP. Many years ago the oil filter manufacturers put in anti-drainback valves in most filters so that engines with sideways or upside down filters would hold oil when idle and prevent startup rap. Looks like the factory Nissan filter does not have the anti drainback valve. Needless to say I will keep changing the oil myself and using Fram filters.

The QR25DE engine has a camshaft chain tensioner activated by oil pressure. It is normal to hear a rattle for a second at first cold start. Use the search function - there are several threads on this and piston slap when cold (another anomaly to the QR25DE).

Like you noticed, this engine works well with synthetic oil - especially in winter. This also reduces the tensioner rattle. I have a 2013 Rogue with about 90k on it and have been using Mobil 1 5/30 and a Fram XG7317 (the filter is about 1" longer than stock).

BTW - Best way to start the Rogue is to turn the ignition on, then wait 2-3 seconds before start. I believe this gives the computer time to collect ambient temp and other data. I've noticed when I do this the tensioner rattle is reduced or eliminated.

And welcome to the forum. Make sure you use the search function before posting questions. You'll find a lot of stuff is common and has been answered before.
