My 240 just recently started doing this to me. it had low compression but i squirted oil in each cylinder and it brought the compression back up (it stayed up also, it was like it hadnt been run in a long time and the rings needed to be reseated). It was thought to also have a blown head gasket because waster was leaking from somewhere but that was a crack in the hose that goes from the bottom of the intake manifold to the back of the termostat housing. I replaced that hose then started it but as soon as it started it idled for a half a sec then died. I can keep it running by giving it gas but if i let off it will always just die. I took the plugs out and they seemed a little nasty (also i think it does have internal water leaking somewhere because there was moisture on the plugs). Could there be another reason why its doing this or do I need to dive into the motor to find out where the water is leaking from. I was hoping to have it driveable then find the cause of the moisture on the plugs. What do you think?

Well after cleaning the spark plugs I went to start it to see if it would stay running (it didnt btw), but I forgot I had the radiator cap off to put more water in and when I started it I was keeping it running by revving the motor to 1500. Everytime I would rev it up coolant would shoot out the radiator, does this mean blown headgasket or is that just the water pump doing its job?

well I took the water pump out of the equation (took off the belt) and the water still shoots out, so I guess I am going to be replacing a headgasket

Update: I was reading through some posts and someone had a similar problem as me and they were told to check there distributor. I went out to check mine and taking the wires off I noticed one was too easy to get off the distributor. Well the part that clips in distributor had desentigrated ...So i take the other wires off the distributor and 2 out of the remaining 3 did almost the same thing. I am guessing this is contributing to my car not staying running unless I give it gas. So I am going to buy a wireset next week and see if that fixes it or not
