I have a s14 with a s13 redtop in it. On occasion my car will sometimes not start. I will turn the key and hear a click, but nothing. If I keep turning the key over and over it will eventually start, or the battery will die. Would this be a relay problem or a starter problem? How can I check which is causing this?

As always any replies are appreciated :)

ah the old click problem. I honestly don't know what it is exactly. If its a click that sounds electrical, probably a relay. If its a faint tapping sound, check your starter and see that its in working order.

With KA's there was some problem about autozone giving out starters that don't have enough teeth on them which could cause this. I suggest you take out the starter, make sure the gear is okay, check the brushes, check the solonoid, and the test it. If its NOT the starter, try borrowing a new battery from a friends car or something and see if that remedies the problem.

It's happened to me even after installing a fresh battery. Is there a way to check the relay?

okay, then its likely relay or the starter itself. It it starts with no problems occasionally, then its probably not the relay. Get your starter checked out.

Are you KA?

Also, make sure the starter wire is nice and clean and tight. Just to rule that out.

Sometimes when the starter isn't working; I get 1 click. And if I turn the key and to ON about 10 times....then the starter works. It seems to do this only after driving around and having the engine hot.

This is exactly what happens to me. What can it be?

I guess I'm bringing this back from the dead, but did your problems ever get fixed? I am having the exact same issue and to start my car right now, I have a jumper wire straight to the starter. I turn on the car as you normally would, but don't turn all the way to start. I then pop the hood, get out of the car and touch that jumper wire to the battery to start. Once started, I have no issues whatsoever. I would love to fix this! Anyone figure out their problem yet?

For those of you still having this problem 240roadz recomended replacing ignition switch and that fixed his problem. Give it a try so 240roadz didnt waste his breath.i still see everyone asking what fixes this problem but nobody has tried any thing and reported back.

I figured out my problem!!! After posting, I decided to go out with my meter and shoot some more wires. Everything checked out good and I was scratching my head. I finally decided to take out the brand new ignition switch and check it without the key/lockset part. The continuity checked out good. I plug it back in and try to start the car straight from the ignition switch...Wouldn't you know! It starts every single time. Doesn't skip a beat! I stuck the ignition switch back into the key/lockset, tried to start and it wouldn't. Pull it back out, and start straight from the switch and I'm good to go! The catch is, until you get a new key/lockset part, you still have to put the key in and turn it so that the steering wheel and shifter (auto) unlocks. Other than that, start your car, put the key in the key hole, and turn... then you're good to go!
