I have a problem with my 1993 240 not starting. The problem started one night when I was leaving work and my car would not start, all I got was the characteristic clicking noise. I was able to get a jump and drive home. The next I began to investigate the problem. I checked the battery and the voltage is good. I even took the battery to two independent places to have it checked and it tested good at both places. I checked the blue relay next to the battery and it passed the continuity test for no voltage applied as well as with voltage applied. The starter has voltage at the terminal equal to that of the battery. I have a lifetime warranty on my starter so I took it to the place for testing. They informed me that they do not do testing and simply gave me a new starter. (I know seems odd.) I put the new starter on and the problem continues. All I get is a clicking noise when I try to start the car. I can jump start the car successfully every time. I even jump started the car with no battery, disconnected the jumper cables and let the car run for 30 minutes with the lights on, radio on and heat blowing to see if the alternator was the problem. The car ran fine. I actually purchased another battery, but no change. The clicking continued. I then replace the new battery with the battery from my wife's car and tried it. Again no improvement. The terminals on her battery are opposite to mine so I had to really stretch the cables. Again no change. I then installed my old battery and the car has started fine for the last two days.

Any suggestions? I do not have a good feeling about this fix, as I do not know what was the cause or why the car now starts.

if its a manual maybe the start relay is bad. next time it just clicks have someone hold it in the start position and you go tap on the relay. if it fires thats your problem.

you could also have a connection problem at your battery terminals. check those out.I know you have taken them off and on but look at where the braiding section is attached as well as the 2 smaller wires attached to the positive clamp.

Hello All,

Well almost five months after the original problem surfaced and mysteriously went away, it is back. Everything is the same. If anyone has any suggestion please let me know, ASAP. I really need to get my car fixed so I can get to work. I never did replace the relay, because banging on it did not help and as you probably know all electrical parts bout are nonreturnable.

Thanks

you need to check both ends of the cables and make sure they are secure at both ends of both cables. make sure the connection where the small connector plugs into the battery cable is secure and has good contact. If it is happening constantly have someone hold your car in the start position when its not starting and you go wiggle the cables at the battery and see if it starts. If it does your problem is right there somewhere

I think it may be my altenator because while letting my car run with the battery disconnected, I open the door after it was running for a while and the car died. I think due to the increase electrical load.

its not good to put your altenator under that kind of stress so yes you could have damaged it but I really dont think that was your initial start problem. A bad altenator wont stop your car from starting unless the battery went dead from lack of charging from the altenator. If you can jump it and it will run after the jumper cables are removed then your altenator is not your problem.

You know what, I had the same problem. It's been buggin me for days. I ruled out the battery, the alternator, and the starter. So I decided to test out other circuits that I thought that could be the problems causing this. Before the testing, I cleaned out the battery terminals. I accidentally got a spark at the battery with my ratchet that hit the positive battery terminal and the metal bracket battery holder(close call). That wasn't suppossed to happen. So I test the battery for voltage and get about 12.5 volts. Good. Then I decided to take off the leads off the battery terminals. I put one of the voltmeter leads on the battery terminal and the other voltmeter lead on the car positive lead. Now keep in mind, there's nothing connecting the two together. There's nothing but air in between here. I got a reading of 6 volts. ??? That wasn't right! I also tried the negative car lead and got the same results. So I took the battery out of the car and tried the same test. No more voltage drop. Put the battery back in the car and the 6 volts are dropping again. Then I took the battery outside and put one voltmeter lead on one battery terminal and the voltmeter lead onto the casing of the battery on all sides. I was droping nearly 6 volts. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I never ran into a battery that shorted itself out! That was the cause of all the non-starting problems and sounds and intermittent windshield wiper happenings. I got a Die Hard battery and my car now starts! Go with the name brand battery. The old battery I had for about a year and it was a Kragen auto store battery. No more off brand name batteries for me. Hope this helps:-)
