This definately sounds like the same fuel pump issue that others are experiencing on this forum. If you do a search for "fuel pump," you'll find several threads regarding this. Instead of turning the car over and over unitl it finally starts, simply leave your key in the on position (not accessory, but on) for a few seconds to allow the pressure to build up. The white smoke was likely because of the engine turning over several times without actually firing.
As for the the fuel pump issue, I've experienced this about 10 times myself since I purchased the car, all at very random times regardless if the car had been run recently or not. It usually happens when I quickly turn the key and let it go and the car doesn't start like it normally would have. I'll simply leave it in the on position for about 5 seconds or so and try again and it works fine. I haven't taken it into the dealership because it's not bad enough yet for them to be able to reproduce the problem, but the current waiting list for fuel pumps is several weeks so I would get it down there asap if it's happening to you regularly.
