Recently my car does not always want to crank up on the first try. Sometimes it will crank up fine and other times I have to try at least 3 times before it will turn on. On the cranks after I let off the ignition switch I hear a Khhhrrrrrrrrrr noise. Sometimes when I get a half start the engine will turnover and let goes and it pushes some type of pressure out (I am not sure if that makes sense or not). Does anyone know the problem might be. It is getting really frustrating. I am not ready to let go of this car now since I am having to park in a confined parking space at college. I would hate to drive my mom's g35 and get scratches on it. I really appreciate the help? Got to make this car last for another 2 yrs. It has close to 200,000 miles.

Thanks, Keyur Patel

I dont understand what pressure you're talking about but the sound may be a bad alternator or starter.

My 240 made the noise last week and wouldnt crank at all. I took a long truck flat head and poked it a few times and then it was ok again.

And if it does turn out to be a starter or alternator etc i'd suggest replacing your pulleys and timing belt too if they're old/worned.

My car has a timing chain and I am planning on changing it in the summer when my dad has sometime and it is nice and hot outside. The alternator is brand new and the starter is just about a year old. I will take into consideration on what you told me and I will check the starter first think in the morning.

Thanks for the help,

Check your grounds. The timing chain should last the lifetime of the max. I know my max has starting problems similar to you and I plan on going thru and replacing all the grounds with a larger wire.

I'm assuming this is a VQ motor correct? I'm not sure about the VG's and VE's.

Well I am not exactly sure of what engine is in the car. It is the engine that a 1995 Maxima comes with stock. If there are different series that they come in for this car is there any way that I could look at it and tell if it is a VG or VQ?

This is what my engine looks like, but I don't have the turbo setup. Hope this helps:

Alright wasn't sure of the year. You have the VQ, 1995-present all have the VQ series motor. Don't worry about the timing chain, doesn't need to be replaced on these motors. They are dual stage and last the life of the vehicle.

I'm pretty sure it's just your grounds needing to be replaced. It sounds very familiar to the issue I have and a few other people on other sites and all they did was replace the grounds with a thicker wire. So that's going to be my guess since you said the alt and starter were/are fairly new.
