I have an 89 240sx hatchback KA24E auto (no A/C).
About a year back I was having a problem starting my car: when I turned the key the starter would just click and nothing else would happen (eventually after several tries it would start, or sometimes it would start on the first try). I took the starter out and cleaned the brushes, put it back in and the problem disappeared. 6 months later the starter died and I replaced it, but unfortunately the problem came back with the brand new starter. I replaced the ignition and, once again, the problem was fixed. now, 6 months later, the problem is back!
Any ideas on what to replace next?

u probably had several problems. replacing parts to solve a start problem is foolhardy. trouble shoot per the starter tutorial.

Alternator might be bad.
Can be a wiring issue causing something to be on.
Bad battery.
Check the starter again also.

alright i'll check the fuses and fusable links. thats pretty much the only thing left on the troubleshooting flow chart that i havent replaced yet.

had several issues with mine starting also (sometimes it will, sometimes it wont), replaced starter, same thing, replaced clutch relay, same thng, bypassed clutched switch, same thing, battery, alternator, ground wer all good and if you push start it, it starts up fine so d damn click sound was isolating a starter promblem.. ended up taking it to a shop and dey couldnt figure it out either. solution: wire a new ignition system since something in d wiring harness is messed up. ( d shop did it since i was just so piss and confused and by d time i figure it out how to wire it, a week would have passed ) so here it is to save you guys $175 ( what i was charge with even supplying d starter and relay. ) install a new starter, get a universal 4 blade relay. wire 1 to d ignition switch, 1 to starter ignition wire (where d harness connects to) 1 to positive terminal of battery and 1 to negative terminal of battery. so simple of a solution bypassing countless hours of troubleshooting. wish i thought of it! lol hope this helps and saves you money!
