Hi all,

New user..please be gentle!

I've have a 2003 maxima and was driving it a few months back and it stopped on me a few times. Went to SearsAuto..they said it was chamshaft/crackshaft sensors. Got them replaced, problem was fixed for a while. I would have trouble turning it on, but it ran good. About 2 weeks ago, my car stopped again. This time I went to Nissan and they said same problem, so I got it replaced again. And I didnt have trouble starting the car either..until that evening. So i took it back to them and they said its a AirFlowMeter/Sensor (i dont know if they are 2 different parts) and they wanted to charge $800!..I told them dont fix it. The car runs fine when it can turn on, but obviously the problem seems to be turning it on.

Do any of you think that it could be the Air Flow Sensor? Or could it be something else? Any information will be helpful.

Thanks!!

Welcome to NICO.

I believe what they are referring to is the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF). If you have basic mechanical abilities, it is something you can replace yourself. I would check the wiring going to the MAF and also remove the MAF and clean the inside of the sensor with electrical contact cleaner or dedicated MAF cleaner. If that doesn't help the problem, then you will have to replace it.

You can find info on the MAF starting on page EC-188 of the FSM. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/2003/ec.pdf

The problem could still be with the Crankshaft position sensor(s). Make sure the sensor and related connector are not contaminated with oil. Another likely possibility is the Coolant Temp Sensor. A failing Air Inlet Temp Sensor can also affect starting.

Cleaning the MAF sensor, as suggested by 'max' may help. But if after cleaning and your starting problem comes up again, try disconnecting the MAF sensor. It's possible that it is failing (cold solder, cracked board, faulty sensing element, etc). Once disconnected, the ECM will use default fuel/ignition map to start the engine. If car started, most likely the MAF sensor is bad. The OEM sensor is highly recommended and best pricing is available from NICO sponsor, IoS (infiniti of Scottsdale) - infinitipartsUSA.com.

There are cheaper aftermarket MAF sensors but double check before buying such item.
